The Province of Río Muni was a part of Spain in Africa a long time ago. Today, most of this area is part of a country called Equatorial Guinea. It also included two islands, Corisco and Elobey. A Look Back in Time

The land that became Río Muni was given to Spain by Portugal in 1778. This happened a very long time ago!

The exact borders of this area on the continent were decided later. This was done in a special agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1900. This treaty helped define where Río Muni ended and other countries began.

From 1959 to 1963, Río Muni was a Spanish province. It was joined with another area called Fernando Poo. After 1963, it became part of the "autonomous region of Equatorial Guinea." An autonomous region is a part of a country that has some power to govern itself. Río Muni kept this name until it became fully independent from Spain in 1968.

On September 1, 1960, a group called the Provincial Council of Río Muni was created in Bata. This council was like a local government. Its first leader was José Vedú.

Where Was It?

The people living in Río Muni were mostly from the Fang people group. There were also other Bantu groups living along the coast, like the Kombe people.
