Growing Up and High School Football
Saahdiq Charles was born in New Orleans. In 2005, his family had to leave their home because of Hurricane Katrina. This was a very powerful storm that caused a lot of damage.
After the hurricane, his family moved around a lot. They lived in Houston, Valdosta, Georgia, and Montgomery, Alabama. Finally, they settled down in Jackson, Mississippi.
Saahdiq went to Madison-Ridgeland Academy for high school. There, he played football on both offense and defense. He was a highly-rated player, meaning many colleges wanted him to play for them. He decided to play college football at LSU.
College Football Career
Saahdiq started playing for LSU in 2017. He played in all 13 games during his first year. He started nine of those games. Because he played so well, he was named to the Southeastern Conference (SEC) All-Freshman team. This means he was one of the best new players in his college league.
In his second year, he started ten games. He played as a left tackle. This position helps protect the quarterback.
During his third year, Saahdiq missed some games at the start of the season. This was due to breaking some team rules. But he came back and started the last nine games. That year, his team, the LSU Tigers, won the 2019 National Championship! This is a huge achievement in college football.
After winning the championship, Saahdiq decided to enter the 2020 NFL draft. This meant he would try to play professionally instead of finishing his last year of college.
Playing in the NFL
Saahdiq Charles was chosen by the Washington Redskins in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was the 108th player picked overall. He signed a four-year contract to play for the team.
Playing for Washington
Saahdiq's first year in the NFL was tough because of injuries. He missed the first five games. He finally played his first NFL game in Week 6. He started as a left guard. This position also helps block for the offense. However, he got hurt in the first quarter of that game. He dislocated his kneecap and had to miss the rest of his first season.
In 2021, Saahdiq started his second NFL game. This time, he played as a tackle. He also had to go on the team's COVID-19 reserve list for a short time. Later that season, he started at right guard in two games. He played in ten games during the 2021 season.
In 2022, Saahdiq took over as the starting right guard in Week 4. He started three games in a row. He played in 13 games during this season.
In 2023, Saahdiq won the starting left guard position before the season began. He got a calf injury in Week 7. This put him on injured reserve, meaning he couldn't play. He came back in December. He played in 11 games that season, starting all of them.
Time with the Tennessee Titans
In March 2024, Saahdiq Charles signed a one-year contract with the Tennessee Titans. He was expected to be the starting right guard for the team. However, just a few days into training camp, Saahdiq decided to retire from football. The Titans placed him on their reserve/retired list in August.
