The Saarpfalz (which means Saar-Palatinate) is a special area called a district in the southeast of Saarland, Germany. It's like a county in some other countries.
This district shares its borders with other areas. To its west, it has the Saarbrücken district. To the north, you'll find the Neunkirchen and Kusel districts. To the east are Südwestpfalz and the city of Zweibrücken, which is a district on its own. To the south, Saarpfalz borders the French area called Moselle.
History of Saarpfalz
After World War I, the Saar area was managed by the League of Nations. At that time, the Palatinate region, which was part of Bavaria, was divided. The part that became part of the Saar region was known as Saarpfalz.
This area was managed by two smaller administrative units: St. Ingbert and Homburg. In 1974, these two areas joined together to form the modern Saarpfalz district. Since 1997, the Saarpfalz district has a special partnership with Henrico County, Virginia in the United States.
Symbols: The Coat of Arms
The coat of arms for Saarpfalz tells a story about its past.
- The lion in the top left corner is a symbol of the Palatinate region.
- The cross in the top right corner represents Trier. Both the Palatinate and Trier owned large parts of this district long ago.
- The crosier (a special staff carried by bishops) in the bottom left shows the land that belonged to monasteries.
- The silver lion in the bottom right corner is the symbol of the old county of Homburg.
