Saboyá is a town and a municipality in the Boyacá Department of Colombia. It is located in the Western Boyacá Province. This area is known for its beautiful landscapes and rich history.

What Does Saboyá Mean?
The name Saboyá comes from the Chibcha language. In Chibcha, it means "Taste for the mantles." Mantles were special cloaks or blankets.
A Look Back: Saboyá's History
Before the Spanish arrived, Saboyá was a land ruled by a local leader. This leader was called a cacique, and he had the same name as the town, Saboyá.
Spanish Arrival and Founding
The Spanish came to the central highlands of the Colombian Andes mountains. This was part of the Spanish conquest of the Muisca. The first Spanish encomendero (a person in charge of a group of native people and their land) in Saboyá was Pedro de Galeano. He was a soldier who came with the Spanish explorers.
The modern town of Saboyá was officially started on October 4, 1556. This date marks its founding as a Spanish settlement.
Simón Bolívar's Visits
Simón Bolívar was a very important leader. He helped many South American countries gain independence from Spain. Bolívar visited Saboyá three times:
