In 2011, he won a bronze medal in Snowboard Big Air at the Winter X Games XV, also in Aspen. There, he placed behind Torstein Horgmo and Sebastien Toutant.

About Sage Kotsenburg

Sage Kotsenburg was born in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. He grew up in Park City, Utah. His parents are Carol Ann and Steve Kotsenburg. His father works as a real estate agent. Sage has two older brothers and one younger sister.

He started snowboarding when he was five years old. His older brother, Blaze, taught him. All three younger siblings enjoy snowboarding together. Their mother helps Sage with his travel plans for competitions.

Kotsenburg was taught at home through the Alpha Omega Academy. He finished his schooling in 2011. Since 2016, he has followed a plant-based diet, meaning he is a vegan.

Sage's Snowboarding Career

Kotsenburg first competed in the US Open when he was just 12 years old. At 16, he won a silver medal in slopestyle at the European X Games in 2010.

In February 2011, he landed a new trick called the Cab double cork 1440. He did this at the Air & Style event in Innsbruck. Later that year, he placed third at the 2011 Arctic Challenge. In December 2011, he joined the U.S. Snowboarding Slopestyle Pro Team.

He continued his success by winning another silver medal in Slopestyle at the Winter X Games XVI in 2012.

Olympic Gold Medal

Kotsenburg won the slopestyle gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He performed a trick he had never tried before in a competition. He also used an original grab he created, which he called the "Holy Crail." This win made him the first gold medalist of the 2014 Olympic Games. It was also the first medal for the United States at those games.

After his big win in 2014, Kotsenburg decided to stop competing. He chose to focus on exploring backcountry snowboarding instead. This means snowboarding in natural, untouched areas, away from groomed slopes.

During the summer, Kotsenburg trains at Mt. Hood. He goes to the High Cascade Snowboard Camp. In the summer of 2014, Kotsenburg and his "Lick the Cat" crew were given a special training session.
