Sagittaria trifolia, also known as the threeleaf arrowhead or Chinese arrowhead, is a type of plant that loves wet places. You can find it growing all over Europe and in many parts of Asia. It's known for its interesting leaves and its underground parts that people can eat!
Where Does It Grow?
This plant is originally from a huge area of the world. It naturally grows in countries like Ukraine, Russia (both European and Asian parts), Central Asia, China, India, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Korea, Pakistan, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
It has also started growing in new places where it wasn't originally found, like the Fiji, Cook, and Society Islands in the Pacific Ocean. This means it has spread and made itself at home there!
A Plant for Food
Sagittaria trifolia is special because it grows edible parts underground. These parts are called tubers. Think of them a bit like small potatoes that grow under the soil.
In some parts of Asia, people actually grow this plant on purpose as a food crop. The tubers are very healthy and full of starch. Starch is a type of carbohydrate that gives you energy, just like in rice or bread. So, these tubers are a good source of food for many people!
