Salad cream is a creamy, pale yellow condiment. A condiment is something like a sauce or spice that you add to food to make it taste better. Salad cream is made from a mix of oil and water. It uses egg yolk to help the oil and water mix together smoothly. This process is called an emulsion. It also has a tangy taste from vinegar.
Other ingredients can be added to salad cream. These might include sugar, mustard, salt, and spices. Sometimes, thickeners or colouring are used too.
The first ready-made salad cream was sold in the United Kingdom in 1914. People use it as a salad dressing on salads. It is also popular as a spread for sandwiches.
Historically, salad cream was mentioned in old Victorian writings. Back then, it was often made by mashing hard-boiled eggs with cream, mustard, salt, and vinegar.
Popular Salad Cream Brands
In the UK, several companies have made salad cream. These include the H. J. Heinz Company and Crosse & Blackwell.
Heinz Salad Cream: A UK Favorite
Heinz Salad Cream was the first brand made just for the UK market. It was created in 1914 in the Heinz kitchens in Harlesden. When it was first made, workers prepared it by hand.
The jars were packed into barrels lined with straw. Each barrel held 12 dozen jars, which is 144 jars. The goal was to make 180 dozen jars (2,160 jars) each day. Workers even got a small bonus if they made more than the target!
