Salcombe Regis is a small, charming village located right by the sea in the county of Devon, England. It's a quiet place that used to be its own local area, called a "civil parish." Now, it's part of the bigger town of Sidmouth.

Discovering Salcombe Regis

This lovely coastal village is found in the East Devon district. It's known for its beautiful views and peaceful atmosphere.

A Glimpse into History

Salcombe Regis has a long history! It was even mentioned in the Domesday Book. This was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror way back in 1086. In the Domesday Book, Salcombe Regis was called "Selcoma." It was described as a "manor," which was like a large estate or land area.

The manor of Selcoma was owned by Osbern FitzOsbern. He was a bishop from Exeter. The main house of this old manor used to stand where Thorn Farm is today. You can still see a special thorn tree at a road junction above the farm. This tree once marked the edge between the manor's cultivated land and common land.

In 1951, about 869 people lived in Salcombe Regis. On April 1, 1974, the village's local government area (its parish) joined with Sidmouth.

St. Peter's Church

The village is home to the historic Church of St Peter. It was built around the year 1107. The church was later repaired and updated in 1845. Inside, you can find special memorials for two very important scientists:

  • Sir Ambrose Fleming: He was an electrical engineer and physicist. He invented the first electronic vacuum tube, which was a big step for radio and electronics!
  • Sir Norman Lockyer: He was an astronomer. He discovered the element helium in the sun's atmosphere!

Both of these famous scientists are buried right there in the church.
