Salmon Trout River in Marquette County
46°51′47″N 87°46′16″W / 46.86306°N 87.77111°W This Salmon Trout River is found in the Huron Mountains in Marquette County. It's a special place because it's home to a unique type of fish called the "coaster" brook trout.
River's Journey and Size
This river is about 20.8 miles (or 33.5 kilometers) long. It starts in the northern parts of Michigamme Township and Marquette Township. Then, it flows through Powell Township. The very beginning of the river, called its headwaters, is in an area known as the Yellow Dog Plains. Finally, this river flows into Lake Superior, which is one of the Great Lakes. It joins the lake a few miles northwest of a town called Big Bay.
Land Ownership and Access
A private group called the Huron Mountain Club (HMC) owns a large amount of land in the mountains. This includes a part of the Salmon Trout River. Because it's a private club, they are very strict about who can visit their property.
What's Happening Near the River?
Recently, this river has been talked about a lot. This is because there's a plan to build a sulfide mine close to where the river begins. Some groups are worried that this type of mining could cause something called acid mine drainage. This drainage could harm the water and the environment. However, others who support the mine believe that it can be built and operated without causing any damage to nature.

River's Journey and Size
This second Salmon Trout River is about 17.5 miles long. It starts in Adams Township. This is just north of M-26, between the towns of Painesdale and Toivola. The river flows over the Redridge Steel Dam before it empties into Lake Superior. It joins the lake on the west side of the Keweenaw Peninsula, near a place called Redridge.
