Saltney is a town located right on the border between England and Wales. It sits across two counties: Flintshire in Wales and Cheshire in England. The Welsh part of Saltney is a local government area called a "community." The English parts do not have this special status.

Saltney is very close to the city of Chester. It is also near the River Dee. In 2011, about 5,132 people lived in Saltney.

Where is Saltney?

Part of Saltney is in Chester, Cheshire, England. People often call this area "Top Saltney" or "Higher Saltney." The Welsh part of the town is simply called "Saltney."

A very interesting fact about Saltney is its main street, Boundary Lane. The border between England and Wales runs right down the middle of this street! This means that houses on one side are in Wales (Flintshire) and houses on the other side are in England (Cheshire).

Because of this unique border, different police forces cover each side. The Welsh side is covered by North Wales Police. The English side is covered by Cheshire Police. Even though they are different forces, officers from both can work anywhere in England and Wales.

Saltney's Past

Saltney gets its name from the old salt marshes that used to be by the River Dee. The town started to grow a lot in the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s. It grew from a small area to a town with over 5,000 people today.

Long ago, Saltney was a place where ships were built. It was also famous for making chains and anchors. A company called Henry Wood & Company started an engineering factory here in 1847. More factories opened in the 1880s. Henry Wood was so important that a local school, Wood Memorial CP School, is named after him.

An old Welsh name for the area is Morfa Caer.
