Samaria is a small community in Monroe County, Michigan. It's not a city or a town with official borders. This means it doesn't have its own government or population count. Samaria is part of Bedford Township. Even without official borders, it has its own post office. This post office uses the ZIP Code 48177.

Where is Samaria?

Samaria is located in the southern part of Monroe County. It sits about 643 feet (196 meters) above sea level. The community is about 15 miles (24 km) southwest of the city of Monroe.

The center of Samaria is along Samaria Road. This road is between two main highways. To the west is U.S. Route 23. To the east are U.S. Route 24 (Telegraph Road) and M-125 (South Dixie Highway).

Samaria is also close to the Ohio state border. It's about 5 miles (8 km) north of Toledo. Other nearby communities include Temperance and Lambertville. These are just south of Samaria.

Most students in Samaria go to Bedford Public Schools. Some students in the northern part of the community attend Mason Consolidated Schools.

A Look at Samaria's History

The area where Samaria is located is part of Bedford Township. This township was created on March 23, 1836. Before that, it was part of Erie Township.

The community was once called Weeksville. This name came from early residents, Samuel and Mary (Mason) Weeks. In 1872, the Wabash Railroad built a train line through the area. A railway station was built in Samaria in May 1878. The community was officially mapped out in 1884.

Samaria got its first post office on January 17, 1879. Samuel Weeks was the first postmaster. The post office has been open ever since. Today, it is located at 1344 Samaria Road. The 48177 ZIP Code is mainly for post office boxes. Most of the surrounding area uses the 48182 ZIP Code for Temperance.

The same train line still runs through Samaria. It is now operated by the Ann Arbor Railroad. This line connects Ann Arbor to Toledo. However, there is no longer a train station in Samaria.
