San Telmo's History
Farm Worker Protest in 2015
On March 17, 2015, a large protest took place in the San Quintín and San Telmo areas. About 300,000 people work in this coastal region. It is a major area for growing crops like strawberries, tomatoes, and cucumbers for export.
The farm workers were asking for better pay and government benefits. These benefits included social security and insurance. Before the protest, workers earned about 110 pesos per day for 10 hours of work.
Workers shared their concerns during a meeting with representatives. However, talks with the Consejo Agricola de Baja California stopped. This happened when Alberto Munoz, a representative for the farm businesses, did not return to the meeting.
Fidel Sanchez, a spokesperson for a group called the Alliance of National Organizations for Social Justice, spoke up. This group helps farm laborers. He told the business representatives that if Munoz did not show up, he could not control what the protesters might do. The United Farm Workers of America (UFW) from the United States supported the Mexican farm workers. They started an online petition aimed at big companies like Driscoll's.
When their requests were not met, protesters blocked the Transpeninsular Highway. This highway is important for sending crops to markets in California. To keep things calm, many soldiers and police officers were sent to the area. This included small cities like San Telmo, Camalú, and San Quintín.
Later, the protesters decided to unblock the highway, which helped reduce the tension. While some events ended peacefully, others did not. One incident became violent because Munoz was not at the negotiation meeting. During this time, some people were injured.
Because of this protest, gas stations, stores, and schools, including El Porvenir Primary School, had to close. Harvesting in the greenhouses also stopped because workers were not there.
The protest also affected most farm businesses' exports. But they returned to full production after a few days with little damage. Many farmers went back to work even though all their demands were not met. However, some important changes did happen. These included better access to social security, efforts to stop child labor, improved safety measures, housing for workers, and stronger labor rights.
