Santa Rosalía (pronounced SAN-tah roh-sah-LEE-ah) is a town and municipality in the Vichada Department of Colombia. It is a warm place located in a big, flat area.
Where Santa Rosalía Is Located
Santa Rosalía is part of the Llanos plain. This is a huge flat area that Colombia shares with Venezuela. It is also part of Colombia's Orinoquia region. The weather here is usually hot and dry. The average temperature is about 28 degrees Celsius (82 degrees Fahrenheit) all year round.
The main part of the town sits right on the bank of the Meta River. This river also acts as a border between the Vichada Department and the Department of Casanare.
Santa Rosalía shares its borders with several other places:
- To the north, it borders the Department of Casanare.
- To the east, it borders the municipality of La Primavera.
- To the south, it borders the municipality of Cumaribo.
- To the west, it borders the Department of Meta.
A Look at Santa Rosalía's Past
Long ago, the area where Santa Rosalía is now was home to native tribes. The Guahibo people were one of the main groups living there. When people from Spain and other parts of Europe arrived, they did not settle this specific region until the 16th century.
Santa Rosalía was first set up as a port. This means it was a place where boats could load and unload goods. It was especially important for moving cattle from large farms called haciendas. In 1993, Santa Rosalía officially became a municipality, which is like becoming its own local government area.
