Santo Bugito was a fun American animated TV show created by Arlene Klasky and produced by Klasky-Csupo for CBS. It aired for 13 episodes and was all about the daily lives of a community of insects.

This series was special because it brought back the idea of stories about insect communities. Not many shows like it had been seen since the movie Mr. Bug Goes to Town. Famous actors like James Belushi even made guest appearances. The regular voice cast included Tony Plana, William Sanderson, Henry Gibson, George Kennedy, Cheech Marin, and Joan Van Ark.

What is Santo Bugito About?

Santo Bugito takes place in a town of the same name. This town is located right on the border between Texas and Mexico. It's filled with different insects who act like people.

The main character is Carmen De La Antchez, an ant voiced by Marabina Jaimes. She runs a restaurant in town with her husband, Paco, voiced by Tony Plana.

Other interesting insects live in Santo Bugito:

  • Clem (William Sanderson) and Burt (Michael Stanton) are two loud American flies.
  • Lencho (Cheech Marin) is a very energetic flea.
  • Eaton Woode (Charlie Adler) is a termite who is also a cynical artist.
  • Rosa (Candi Milo) is a butterfly, and her boyfriend Miguel is still in his cocoon.
  • Amelia (Joan Van Ark) is an excited damselfly.
  • Ralph (George Kennedy) is a big, friendly ladybug with a deep voice.
  • There's also a praying mantis professor (David Paymer) who sometimes tries to give boring lessons. Luckily, another character usually pushes him off-screen!

The show mostly tells "slice of life" stories. These are everyday adventures, but with a funny insect twist. For example, in one episode, "The Carmen Tango," the town tries to keep going when Carmen breaks her leg. In "A Widow Goes a Long Way," Lencho tries to get a famous black widow spider dancer to perform. Another episode, "Sue City," shows what happens when a mosquito lawyer named Emma Squito comes to town. Everyone starts suing each other, and Emma gets to drink their blood! A mariachi band made of ants often plays music and helps tell the story.
