Early Life and Learning
Sarah was born in Islamabad, Pakistan. Her family loved science, so she grew up around many scientific ideas. From a young age, she loved aviation (flying). Her father worked with engines and machines, and Sarah often helped him. This sparked her lifelong interest in engineering.
Sarah earned her first degree in mechanical engineering from the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) in Pakistan. After that, she studied at Cranfield University in the UK. There, she earned a master’s degree in aerospace dynamics and a PhD in aerospace propulsion. While studying at NUST, Sarah also followed her dream of flying and got a private pilot's license. She continued her flying training while at Cranfield.
Her Amazing Career
Sarah started her career working in the automotive industry in Pakistan. She also did research on how to control drones (UAVs) to follow a path and stay stable in the air. During her PhD studies, Sarah helped guide other students with their research projects on jet engine technology.
Inventing a Special Engine
Sarah and her father, Masood Latif Qureshi, who is a famous scientist, started a company called Aero Engine Craft. Their goal was to create new, environment-friendly engines for airplanes. Sarah designed a special aero-engine that helps fight global warming. This engine is designed to reduce the amount of harmful gases it releases.
Her engine has a unique system that cools the water vapor coming out of the airplane's exhaust. This system is based on pressure. The cooled water stays on the plane and can be released later, like rain, when needed. Sarah explained, "We built an engine and then added this special system to make it a contrail-free aero-engine." Contrails are the white lines you sometimes see behind airplanes in the sky. She also said that this new engine will be tested on a real aircraft soon.
Sarah began working on this amazing technology in 2018 as part of her PhD studies at Cranfield. She still works with her professor on this project. Sarah shared that her project has already received two international patents. A patent means no one else can copy her invention without permission. She believes it will take at least six more years before the engine is ready for commercial use. Sarah is confident that her invention will change the aviation industry and show the world Pakistan's efforts in fighting global warming.
Awards and Recognition
In 2023, Sarah Qureshi won the Study UK Alumni Awards in Pakistan. She received this award for her work in science and for helping the environment. In 2024, the President of Pakistan announced that Sarah would receive the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz. This is Pakistan's fourth-highest civilian honor. She received it for her excellent work in the field of science.
