Satah Mountain is a special mountain in British Columbia, Canada. It has two peaks, like two tops close together! You can find it in the middle of British Columbia, near a lake called Punkutlaenkut Lake and the town of Anahim Lake.

Mountain's Story

How Satah Mountain Got Its Name

The name Satah Mountain became official on March 13, 1947. Before that, people sometimes called it Mount Lion. This name appeared on a map drawn in 1923 by a surveyor named W. Merston. The name Satah comes from the Chilcotin language. It means "Of the Sun and Moon," which is a beautiful meaning!

Early Surveys of the Area

W. Merston, the surveyor, did a lot of work in the Upper Chilcotin Valley. He measured the land and made detailed maps. His work covered a large area, stretching from Anahim Peak all the way to the 124th meridian. He also mapped the Itcha Range, which is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northwest of Satah Mountain.

What Satah Mountain Is Made Of

Satah Mountain is a type of volcano called a complex volcanic cone. It is made from different kinds of volcanic rock, like trachyte, benmoreite, and basaltic trachyandesite. The two peaks of the mountain rise about 300 to 400 meters (980 to 1,300 feet) above the flat land around them.

The Two Peaks

The western peak of Satah Mountain has a flat top. It looks a bit like a tuya, which is a flat-topped volcano formed under a glacier. The eastern peak still looks like a cone. It has a volcanic crater on its southwestern side, which is about 180 meters (590 feet) wide.

Younger Volcanic Features

On the northern side of Satah Mountain, there is a small scoria ring. This is a small, breached volcanic cone. It looks like it hasn't been changed much by glaciers. This suggests that it might be younger than the main mountain itself.

Satah Mountain's Volcanic History

Satah Mountain is one of the biggest volcanoes in the Satah Mountain volcanic field. It is a "polygenetic" volcano, meaning it erupted many times over a long period. It was active about 1.83 to 1.77 million years ago, during a time called the Early Pleistocene epoch. Most other volcanoes in this area are smaller and probably erupted only a few times. The only other polygenetic volcano nearby is Mount Punkutlaenkut, which is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) northwest of Satah Mountain.
