History of Savosa
Savosa was first mentioned in official records way back in 1335. At that time, its name was Savoxa.
Early Communities
In the Middle Ages, Savosa and another area called Rovello were like small, self-governing communities. They were part of a larger district known as the Pieve of Lugano. A big church in Lugano, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, owned a lot of land in Rovello during the 11th and 12th centuries. Later, in the 14th century, the Bishop of Como had special rights over the land in both Savosa and Rovello.
The S. Maurizio complex in Rovello included a farmhouse, a chapel, and a cemetery. It was started by a religious group called the Humiliati. In 1365, the Bishop of Como and a hospital in Lugano took it over. Much later, in 1906, a rich businessman named Emilio Maraini bought the complex.
Becoming an Independent Parish
Savosa was part of the Lugano church area until 1801. Then, it joined the Porza church area. In 1825, Savosa became its own independent church area, or parish. In 1927, Rovello and Crocifisso joined Savosa's parish. The main church, called Beata Vergine Annunciata, was first mentioned in 1578. It has been rebuilt and fixed up many times over the years.
Economy and Growth
For a long time, the people of Savosa mostly worked in farming. But in the 20th century, trade and other industries started to grow. A plant nursery opened in 1903, and a vineyard (where grapes for wine are grown) opened in 1907.
In the second half of the 20th century, many companies that build and sell homes moved to the hamlet (small village) of Crocifisso. This area became popular because it was connected to the city's tramway in 1957 and was close to Lugano. This growth helped the whole town of Savosa develop. A high school, Gymnasium Lugano 2, was also built in Savosa. By 2000, most people living in Savosa traveled to other towns, especially Lugano, for work.
