Scaur Water is a river in Scotland that starts high up in the Carsphairn and Scaur Hills. These hills are part of the Southern Uplands in the area called Dumfries and Galloway. The river is known for its beautiful scenery and fun activities.

Where Scaur Water Flows

The Scaur Water begins its journey near a place called Polskeoch. It then flows for about 30 kilometers (which is about 19 miles). As it travels, the river drops from a height of 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) down to 55 meters (about 180 feet). This change in height creates different parts of the river, from fast-flowing sections to calmer areas.

The river eventually joins another, larger river called the River Nith. This meeting point is about two miles southwest of a town called Thornhill. For some of its path, Scaur Water also forms a natural border between two local areas, Tynron and Keir.

The Scaur Glen: Nature and Art

The valley where the Scaur Water flows is called the Scaur Glen. This glen is a special place because it combines natural beauty with outdoor art.

Art in Nature

You can find several interesting sculptures by an artist named Andy Goldsworthy along the river. Andy Goldsworthy is famous for creating art using natural materials like rocks, leaves, and branches. His artworks blend right into the landscape, making a visit to the Scaur Glen a unique experience.

Ancient History and Forests

The Scaur Glen also has a long history. You can find old Bronze Age forts here. These forts were built thousands of years ago by people who lived in the area. They show us how ancient communities protected themselves.

For most of its length, the Scaur Glen is surrounded by forests. These woods are filled with birch and oak trees, which add to the beautiful green scenery.

Fun Activities on Scaur Water

Scaur Water is a popular spot for outdoor activities, especially for people who love nature and adventure.

Fishing and Canoeing

The river is well-known for trout fishing. Many people enjoy trying to catch trout in its clear waters. It's also a great place for canoeing. The river offers different challenges for paddlers, from calm stretches to more exciting parts.

One popular spot for canoeing is near the Glenmarlin Falls, close to the village of Penpont. The falls create a thrilling area for water sports.

The Black Hole Legend

There's a local legend about a deep pool at the bottom of the Glenmarlin Falls. People call this pool the "Black Hole." The story says that the ghosts of a horse and its rider, who sadly drowned there a long time ago, can sometimes be seen. It's a spooky tale that adds to the mystery of the river!
