History of Schönholzerswilen
Schönholzerswilen was first mentioned a very long time ago, in the year 857. Back then, it was called Wichrammeswilare. Later, in 1216, it was known as Wilær. By 1693, its name had changed to Schönholtzerß Wÿlen.
How the Town Grew
For many years, from 1803 to 1964, Schönholzerswilen and another nearby community called Toos worked together. They were part of a larger group called the Munizipalgemeinde of Schönholzerswilen. In 1964, these two communities officially joined to form the single town we know today.
Ancient Times in Schönholzerswilen
People have lived in this area for a very long time. Scientists have found many old objects from the neolithic period. These include stone axes and ancient burial mounds. These finds show that people lived here thousands of years ago.
Coins from the Roman era have also been found. This tells us that Romans were in the area too. Not much is known about the village during the Middle Ages, but some old records mention it.
Church History
Schönholzerswilen likely had its own church by 1275. Over time, its importance changed. By 1508, the village church was a smaller part of a bigger church in Bussnang.
During the Protestant Reformation, the main church in Bussnang changed to Protestant. However, the powerful Abbey of St. Gallen made Schönholzerswilen stay Catholic. Schönholzerswilen remained Catholic until 1677. Later, in 1718, a priest from Zürich came to lead the church. Zürich continued to choose the village priest until 1843.
From 1820, Catholics in Schönholzerswilen were part of the Wuppenau church. Then, in 1854, a new Catholic church was started right in Schönholzerswilen.
