What's in a Name?
The name "Schwanden" comes from an old Swiss German word. This word, Schwand-, means "clearing". A clearing is an open space in a forest. So, the town was built in a cleared area.
In 1911, "bei Brienz" was added to the name. This means "near Brienz". It helped people tell the difference. There were other places named Schwanden in Switzerland. The town was first mentioned in records in 1524.
A Look at History
Early Days and Ownership
Long ago, in the Middle Ages, Schwanden bei Brienz was part of a territory. This territory was called the Herrschaft of Ringgenberg. A Herrschaft was an area ruled by a powerful lord.
In 1374, the Lords of Kien sold the town. It was bought by the von Scharnachtal family from Bern. This family owned the town until 1568. Then, they sold it to the city of Bern itself. Schwanden bei Brienz has always been part of the church area of Brienz.
Changes in Work and Life
For a long time, people in Schwanden bei Brienz mostly raised animals. They moved their herds to different pastures with the seasons. This was called seasonal alpine herding.

Protecting the Village
The village and its fields faced a challenge. The Schwander and Lammbach rivers often flooded. This caused a lot of damage. Starting in the 1890s, people built special projects. These projects helped control the rivers. They protected the village from floods.

They sometimes had sudden, strong rushes of water. Walls have been built to help control the water. This makes the town safer.
