Schwelm is a town in Germany. It is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town is part of the Ennepe-Ruhr Rural District.

Geography of Schwelm
Schwelm is in the southeast part of the Ruhr Area in Germany. It sits between two regions: Westphalia and the Bergisches Land. Schwelm is often called the "Pforte Westfalens", which means "Gate to Westphalia".
History of Schwelm
The town of Schwelm has a long history. It was first mentioned in records way back in the ninth century. Back then, it was known as "Suelmiu". Schwelm officially became a city in 1496. In 1929, it became the main town for the Ennepe-Ruhr Rural District. Schwelm is the smallest town in North Rhine-Westphalia based on its area.

Schwelm Brewery
The "Brauerei Schwelm", or Schwelm Brewery, is here. It is one of the few private breweries left in Germany. It started in 1830. This brewery was one of the first in the world to use metal barrels instead of wooden ones. The original office building, called the "Rietz'sche Haus", was built in 1701. It is still used by the brewery today.
Oldest Piano Maker
Schwelm is also home to the oldest piano manufacturer in the world. The company, "Rud. Ibach Sohn", has been building pianos since 1794. They also made organs until 1904.
