Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island is an animated mystery movie from 1998. It's based on the classic Scooby-Doo cartoons by Hanna-Barbera. This film was released straight to video.
In the movie, the famous Mystery, Inc. gang – Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma, and Daphne – get back together. They had taken a break from solving mysteries. Now, they go to a swampy island that people say is haunted. The ghost of a pirate named Morgan Moonscar is supposedly there. Jim Stenstrum directed the film, and Glenn Leopold wrote the story.
Scooby-Doo became very popular in the 1990s. This was because old episodes were shown again on Cartoon Network. The company that owned Cartoon Network, Time Warner, thought it would be a good idea to make a new Scooby-Doo movie. Many experienced artists and writers from Hanna-Barbera worked on it. Most of the original voice actors were changed, but Frank Welker returned to voice Fred. This movie was also the first of four Scooby-Doo films made overseas by a Japanese animation studio called Mook Animation.
Zombie Island is different from most Scooby-Doo shows. It has a darker feel and features real supernatural creatures. Usually, the monsters in Scooby-Doo are just people in costumes. The movie came out on September 22, 1998. Critics liked it, praising its animation and story. It was the first time the whole gang (without Scrappy-Doo) was together in a Scooby-Doo production since 1984. The film had a big advertising campaign and was very successful. It led to many more Scooby-Doo direct-to-video movies.
Twenty years later, Warner Bros Animation made a sequel. It was called Return to Zombie Island and was released in 2019.

The Mystery Begins
The five members of Mystery, Inc. decide to go their separate ways. They are bored because every mystery they solve turns out to be people in costumes. Daphne, with Fred, starts a successful TV show. Velma opens a book store. Shaggy and Scooby try different jobs. But they always get fired because they get too hungry.
Fred wants to find a real ghost. So, he calls the others, and the whole gang reunites for Daphne's birthday. They go on a road trip across the U.S.. They search for haunted places for Daphne's TV show.
Arriving at Moonscar Island
After finding many fake monsters, the gang arrives in New Orleans, Louisiana. They are tired of the fakes. A young woman named Lena Dupree invites them to Moonscar Island. People say the island is haunted by the ghost of a pirate named Morgan Moonscar. The gang is doubtful, but they decide to go with Lena.
On the island, they meet Simone Lenoir, who owns a large pepper plantation. They also meet Jacques, the ferryman, and Beau, the gardener. Shaggy and Scooby see the ghost of Moonscar. He becomes a reanimated corpse. The gang gets several scary warnings to leave. But they decide to stay overnight, still not believing in real ghosts. Shaggy then sees another ghost, a Confederate colonel, who also warns them to leave.
Real Monsters Appear
That night, Shaggy and Scooby are chased by many zombies. Velma thinks Beau is behind it. Fred and Daphne try to catch a zombie. They think it's a mask, but Fred pulls its head off. This shows them that the zombies are real! As the zombies chase them, the gang gets separated. Daphne accidentally drops Fred's video camera in the quicksand. This means they lose the evidence for their show.
In a cave, Shaggy and Scooby find wax voodoo dolls. The dolls look like Fred, Velma, and Daphne. When Shaggy and Scooby play with the dolls, they accidentally control the gang's actions. This leaves the gang confused. Shaggy and Scooby drop the dolls and run away when they disturb a nest of bats.
The Truth Revealed
The rest of the gang and Beau find a secret passage in the house. Lena tells them that the zombies dragged Simone away. The passage leads to a secret room for voodoo rituals. Velma realizes Lena lied. The footprints in the passage were Simone's, meaning she walked there herself.
Simone, Lena, and Jacques then reveal their true selves. They are evil werecats! Simone explains that 200 years ago, she and Lena were settlers on the island. They worshipped a cat god. When Moonscar and his crew attacked, they chased the settlers into the bayou. The settlers were eaten by alligators. Simone and Lena escaped. They prayed to their cat god to curse Moonscar. Their wish came true, and they became werecats. They killed the pirates.
However, using the cat god's power also cursed them. Every harvest moon, they must drain the souls of victims. They lure people to their island to stay immortal. Jacques became their ferryman to bring them more victims. The zombies are actually their past victims. They awaken every harvest moon and try to scare people away. They want to stop others from suffering the same fate.
The End of the Curse
Shaggy and Scooby interrupt the werecats' soul-draining ceremony. The gang frees themselves, but the werecats surround them. However, it's too late for the werecats. The time for their ceremony has passed. The werecats crumble into dust. This frees the zombies' souls, allowing them to finally rest in peace.
Beau reveals that he is an undercover police officer. He was sent to investigate the many disappearances on the island. Daphne asks Beau to appear on her show. They all leave the island the next morning.
