Scott Sanders, born on June 10, 1968, is an American writer and director who creates movies and TV shows. He is well-known for directing films like Black Dynamite and Thick as Thieves.

Early Life and Education
Scott Sanders was born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He grew up in Washington, DC. His mother, Mrs. Estelle "Bunny" Sanders, is the current mayor of Roper, North Carolina. She is also a member of the UNC Board of Governors.
Scott's father, John Thomas Sanders, worked for IBM. He also owned a popular barbecue restaurant in D.C. called Scott's BBQ. He named it after his son. Famous people like Thurgood Marshall and Walter Mondale often ate there.
Sanders went to Sidwell Friends School and finished in 1986. He then studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in radio, TV, and Motion Pictures.
One of Scott's close friends from childhood is the actor Ben Shenkman. He also went to middle school with Saturday Night Live star Ana Gasteyer. They even acted together in a play when they were in 7th grade.
Career in Film and Television
Early Work in Hollywood
Scott Sanders' first job in Hollywood was at a talent agency called United Talent Agency. After he left that job, he started writing scripts for TV shows. This led to him becoming a writer for popular shows. Some of these shows include A Different World, Roc, and The Wayans Brothers. He also directed a commercial for Motorola.
Directing Thick as Thieves
Sanders directed his first movie, Thick as Thieves, in 1998. It starred actors like Alec Baldwin and Michael Jai White. The movie was based on a book and Scott helped write the script. It was shown for the first time at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. One reviewer said that young director Scott Sanders made a "distinctive contribution" to the film.
Creating Black Dynamite
Black Dynamite first showed at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Sony Pictures Entertainment decided to distribute it worldwide. Scott Sanders directed the movie and helped write the script. He worked with the movie's star, Michael Jai White, and Byron Minns. A critic described Black Dynamite as a "wickedly silly '70s-style blaxploitation spoof." They noted it was "intentionally and often delightfully shlocky."
Black Dynamite was shown at many film festivals in 2009. These included the Seattle International and Tribeca. At the 2009 Seattle International Film Festival, Black Dynamite won the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Film. Sony Pictures released the movie on October 16, 2009.
Sanders and others later turned Black Dynamite into an animated TV series. The show, called Black Dynamite, aired on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. It ran for two seasons from 2012 to 2014.
Aztec Warrior Film
In 2012, Sanders directed a comedy-action movie called Aztec Warrior. It stars Luis Guzman as a retired Lucha Libre wrestler. He decides to come out of retirement. Scott Sanders co-wrote the script for this film. Aztec Warrior was expected to be released in 2013. However, as of July 2025, details about its release are still unknown.
Personal Life
Scott Sanders lives in Los Angeles, California. Besides writing and directing, he is also a popular DJ in Los Angeles. He performs under the name Suckapunch.
