The Story of Scottville

How Scottville Got Its Name

Scottville started as a town built by a company called Bowen Consolidated Coal Mines Limited. This company wanted a place for its workers to live. It was first planned to be called Scottdale or Scotsdale. These names were chosen to honor two of the company's directors, Adam Hall Scott and John Dinsdale. However, the postal service had some concerns, so the name was changed to Scottville.

Early Days of Scottville School

The first school in Scottville was called Scottdale Provisional School. It opened on January 28, 1924. The first teacher was Albert Czislowski. The school started in a simple building with an iron roof and walls made of bags. By June 1924, 35 students were learning there.

In August 1924, the Queensland Government decided to build a proper school building. It cost £744, which was a lot of money back then! The school's name changed to Scottville Provisional School in September 1924. Then, on February 27, 1925, it officially became Scottville State School.

The Scottville sports ground opened on June 3, 1924. People from Collinsville even came by bus to join the fun! They had many different sports and games. These included kicking and throwing balls, wood chopping, and even wheelbarrow racing. There was also a ladies' nail driving contest and 5-a-side soccer games.
