Scrub Island is a small island that is about 8 square kilometers (3 square miles) in size. It is located near the main island of Anguilla, which is a special territory of the United Kingdom in the Caribbean Sea. You can easily get to Scrub Island by boat.
The island is privately owned. You can still see the remains of an old, unused airfield there. There are also several houses that have been left empty, mostly because of damage from strong storms called hurricanes. Scrub Island does not have electricity or running water.
Animal Life on Scrub Island
Scrub Island is a very important place for animals, especially birds. Experts have named it an Important Bird Area. This means it's a key spot for birds to live and raise their young. This special status was given by BirdLife International, a group that works to protect birds worldwide.
Birds of Scrub Island
Many different kinds of birds make their homes on Scrub Island.
- Seabirds: These birds spend most of their lives near the ocean. They include laughing gulls, royal terns, roseate terns, and least terns. These birds often build their nests on the island.
- Landbirds: Birds that live on the land include Caribbean elaenias and pearly-eyed thrashers.
Reptiles and Other Animals
Scrub Island is also home to five types of reptiles:
- The Anguilla Bank ameiva
- The Anolis gingivinus
- The little dwarf gecko
- The island dwarf gecko
- The endangered leeward island racer (a type of snake that is at risk of disappearing forever)
You might also spot large sea turtles like green turtles and leatherback turtles near the island. Sometimes, whales are seen swimming in the waters west of Scrub Island.
However, there are also some animals that are not native to the island, such as feral goats (goats that live in the wild) and rats.
