The Liga Premier is an important football (soccer) league in Mexico. It is the third level of professional football in the Mexican football league system. This league includes two main divisions: Serie A and Serie B. Teams in the Liga Premier play matches from the fall to the spring each year.
In this league, teams can move up (get promoted) to a higher league called Liga de Expansión MX. Teams can also move down (get relegated) to a lower league called Liga TDP. This system helps keep the competition exciting!

History of Mexican Football's Third Tier
The Liga Premier has a long history. Before 1994, the league was known as the Segunda División (Second Division). The champion of the 1993–94 season was the last team to move up to Mexico's top league, the Primera División.
In 1994, the Mexican Football Federation created a new league called "Primera División A." This league took 15 teams from the old Segunda División. The remaining teams stayed in the Segunda División, but it became the third level of Mexican football.
Over the years, the league changed its structure. In 2008, it was divided into two new parts: the Liga Premier de Ascenso (which means "Promotional Premier League") and the Liga de Nuevos Talentos (meaning "League of New Talents"). These changes helped organize the teams better.
In 2020, the league system changed again. The second-level league became the Liga de Expansión MX. Some teams from Liga Premier were invited to join this new league. However, it became harder for teams to move up because of strict rules about stadiums and money.
Rebranding and New Divisions
In June 2017, the Segunda División got a new name: Liga Premier. This was a big change! The league kept its two divisions, but they were renamed:
- Serie A
- Serie B
Serie A includes both independent teams and teams that are connected to bigger clubs in the Liga MX and Liga de Expansión MX. Serie B is only for independent teams.
Now, there are clear rules for teams moving between these leagues. One club from Serie A can move up to the Liga de Expansión MX. Also, one club from Serie B can move up to Serie A, and one club from Serie A moves down each year. Plus, four clubs can move up from the Liga TDP (the fourth level) to Serie A, if they meet all the league's requirements.
How the Liga Premier Works Today
The Liga Premier is made up of two main divisions:
Serie A de México
The Serie A de México has 34 teams. These teams are divided into two groups based on their location. At the end of the season, the top 7 teams from each group can play for a chance to move up to the Liga de Expansión MX. To be promoted, their stadiums and finances must meet the league's rules.
