Early Life and Education
Serge Telle was born in Nantes, France. His father worked as an engineer.
He studied at a famous school called Sciences Po. He also learned the Swahili language and earned a degree from the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations. He also studied Community Law.
Career as a Diplomat
Serge Telle started working for the French Foreign Ministry in 1982. His first job was in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he worked at the French Embassy.
From 1984 to 1988, he worked at the Permanent Mission of France to the United Nations in New York City. He then became a special advisor to Bernard Kouchner, who was a Secretary of State.
Telle also worked at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and the United Nations Office at Geneva. From 1997 to 2002, he advised Prime Minister Lionel Jospin on matters related to the Middle East and Africa.
Serving Monaco and Beyond
From 2002 to 2007, Serge Telle was the French Consul General in Monaco. Later, he became the French Ambassador to Monaco.
He continued to advise Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner from 2007 to 2008. From 2008 to 2012, he was the French ambassador to the Union for the Mediterranean. This organization works to build cooperation between countries around the Mediterranean Sea.
He also led the Agency for Cities and Territories of the Mediterranean from 2011 to 2016.
Minister of State of Monaco
On February 1, 2016, Serge Telle was chosen to be the Minister of State of Monaco. He took over from Michel Roger. He served in this important role until August 31, 2020.
In March 2020, he tested positive for COVID-19.
