History of Sergeant Bluff
The city of Sergeant Bluff gets its name from Sergeant Charles Floyd. He was an early member of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition in the 1800s. Sadly, just three months into their long journey, Charles Floyd became very sick. He died on August 20, 1804. Experts believe he died from a ruptured appendix.
He was buried on a hill overlooking a river in Iowa. To honor him, the expedition leaders, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, named the river Floyd River. They also named the hill Floyd's Bluff. This hill is now part of Sioux City. Charles Floyd was the only person to die during the entire Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The small village of Sergeant Bluff began in 1852. It was first called Sergeant's Bluff City. This made it the very first town in Woodbury County. The city officially became a city on May 2, 1904. This was 100 years after Charles Floyd's death.
