Count Sergey Kuzmich Vyazmitinov was an important Russian general and statesman. He was born on October 7, 1744, and passed away on October 15, 1819.
Sergey came from a very old noble family in Russia. He began his military career in 1759 as a corporal. Later, in 1761, he became an ensign in the Ukrainian army.

Early Military Career
Sergey Vyazmitinov served in the Russo-Turkish War, 1768-1774. During this time, he worked as an aide to important military leaders. He helped manage their offices and became a premier-major.
In 1777, he was promoted to colonel. He was put in charge of the Astrakhan infantry regiment. This was a big step in his career.
Rising Through the Ranks
By 1786, Sergey Vyazmitinov became a major general. He was responsible for creating and leading the Astrakhan grenadier regiment. This shows he was trusted with important tasks.
He also fought in the Russo-Turkish War, 1787-1792. He led special groups of soldiers called chasseurs and grenadiers. He helped capture several important cities like Khotin, Akkerman, and Bendery.
Important Government Roles
In 1790, Vyazmitinov became a ruler in Mogilev. He also commanded a special army group. By 1793, he was promoted to lieutenant-general. The next year, he became a Senator, which is a high government position.
He was then appointed as the acting Governor General for the areas of Simbirsk and Ufa. This meant he was in charge of these regions.
Leadership in Different Regions
From 1795, he led the Orenburg Corps. He helped calm a rebellion by the Kyrgyz people. He also helped choose a new leader, or khan, who supported Russia.
He served as military governor in Orenburg and Kamenets-Podolskiy. He was also the Governor General of Malorossiya. In 1797, he became the commandant of the Peter and Paul Fortress. This was a very important fortress in Russia.
Becoming a Minister
In 1802, Sergey Vyazmitinov became the Vice President of the War Collegium. This group helped manage the army. Soon after, he became Russia's first Minister of Land Forces. This is like being the first Defense Minister. He worked hard to organize and improve the army's administration.
When Emperor Aleksander I went to the front lines in 1805, he left Vyazmitinov in charge of St. Petersburg. This showed how much the Emperor trusted him.
Later Career and Honors
In 1811, he rejoined government service as a member of the State Council. This council advised the Emperor.
From 1812, he was part of the Committee of Ministers. He also managed the Ministry of Police when the Emperor was away. Later, he became the Chairman of the Committee of Ministers. In 1816, he was made the military Governor General of St. Petersburg.
In 1818, Sergey Vyazmitinov was given the special title of count. He was buried in the Lazarev burial-vault at the Alexander Nevsky Monastery.
