The Severn River is a long river in northern Ontario, Canada. It starts near the western edge of the province. The river is about 982 kilometers (610 miles) long. Its water basin, which is the area of land that drains into the river, covers about 102,800 square kilometers (39,700 square miles). A small part of this area is in Manitoba.
The Severn River begins at Deer Lake. From there, it flows northeast into Severn Lake. After that, it continues its journey to Hudson Bay, where it finally empties out near a community called Fort Severn.
Communities Along the River
Several First Nation communities are located along the Severn River. These include Sandy Lake, Bearskin Lake, and Fort Severn. These communities grew around places where people used to trade goods a long time ago. The Severn River was very important during the time of the fur trade.
The mouth of the river, where it meets Hudson Bay, was first explored by English captains Thomas James and Luke Foxe in 1631. Later, in 1689, the Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post there called Fort Severn. This post was taken over by Pierre le Moyne in 1690. The fort was rebuilt in 1759 and has been used ever since. This makes Fort Severn one of the oldest European settlements in Ontario.
The small community of Deer Lake, Ontario is located at the very start of the Severn River.
