Where is Shady Spring?
Shady Spring is located in West Virginia. It covers about 6.1 square miles (15.9 square kilometers) of land. Only a very small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.2 square kilometers), is water.
The Story Behind the Name
Shady Spring gets its name from a special spring nearby. This spring was very important to the community. People would often go there to get water, and it was a place where women would gather to wash clothes. The spring was famous because it never dried up!
Early Days of Shady Spring
The very first business in Shady Spring was the Pioneer Inn and Tavern. It was opened in 1832 by Henry Hull and his brothers. Later, the first official post office was set up on August 25, 1925. Mrs. Sarah Willis was the first person to be in charge of the post office.
A Future President Visits
During the American Civil War, a man named Rutherford B. Hayes visited the area in 1862. He later became a President of the United States! He wrote about the spring, saying that a lot of water came out of it, flowed for a short distance, and then went back into the ground.
A Local Hero
Basil L. Plumley was a brave soldier from Shady Spring. He fought in three major wars: World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He is especially remembered for his role in the Battle of Ia Drang during the Vietnam War.

In 2000, there were 2,078 people living in Shady Spring. Most of the people were White (99.52%). A small number of people were of Asian descent or from other backgrounds. About 27.5% of the homes had children under 18 living there. Most homes (59.8%) were married couples.
