Shammond Omar Williams, born on April 5, 1975, is a former professional basketball player. He was born in America but also became a citizen of Georgia (the country). Shammond played as both a point guard and a shooting guard. He played basketball in the NBA (National Basketball Association) and in Europe. As of July 2025, he is an assistant coach for the Denver Pioneers men's basketball team.

Shammond Williams' College Basketball Career

After attending Fork Union Military Academy, Shammond Williams played college basketball for the University of North Carolina. He played under famous coaches Dean Smith and later, Bill Guthridge.

Playing for the "Six Starters" Team

During the 1997–1998 season, Shammond was part of Coach Guthridge's special "Six Starters" group. This group included other talented players like Antawn Jamison and Vince Carter. In his final college season, he scored an average of 16.7 points and made 4.2 assists per game. His overall college career averages were 10.7 points and 3.0 assists per game.

College Records and Achievements

When Shammond Williams finished his time at the University of North Carolina, he held several school records. These records showed how good he was at shooting and free throws:

Playing Basketball in Europe

After his time in the NBA, Shammond also played basketball internationally in Europe. He played for teams like Unics Kazan in Russia. While playing in Russia, he also became a citizen of Georgia. He also played for Winterthur FC Barcelona in Spain.

Shammond was a member of the Georgia national team. In 2005, he was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the EuroChallenge All-Star Game.

Later Career Moves

On July 12, 2006, Shammond signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. After playing one season with the Lakers, he went back to Europe. He signed with Pamesa Valencia for three seasons. Before the 2009–2010 season started, Pamesa Valencia released him. He then trained on his own in the United States.

On November 9, 2009, Shammond returned to Spain and signed with Unicaja Málaga. In January 2011, he signed with Apollon Limassol BC in Cyprus. After finishing the season there, he signed with Sutor Basket Montegranaro in Italy.

Shammond Williams' Coaching Career

After his playing career, Shammond Williams started coaching. During the 2011–12 season, he attended practices for the North Carolina men's basketball team. In 2012, he was considered for a coaching position on Roy Williams' staff at UNC. He also worked as a counselor at the Nike Elite Youth Skill Academies.

Assistant Coaching Roles

On June 21, 2012, Shammond was named an assistant coach for the Furman Paladins. In 2013, he moved to the Tulane Green Wave, where he was an assistant coach for three years. After that, he spent one year as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.

On September 15, 2021, Shammond Williams returned to coaching. He accepted an offer to join the Old Dominion Monarchs women's basketball team as an assistant coach. On July 2, 2024, Williams was hired as an assistant coach for the Denver Pioneers.

Shammond Williams' Personal Life

Shammond Williams has some famous relatives. He is a cousin of former basketball star Kevin Garnett, who played for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He is also a cousin of Louis McCullough, who played professional basketball overseas. Shammond is a member of the Psi Delta chapter of Omega Psi Phi, which is a fraternity. He is also the godfather to basketball player Mitchell Robinson.
