Shane Lowry (born on April 2, 1987) is a famous Irish professional golfer. He plays on two major golf circuits: the European Tour and the PGA Tour. Shane is known for his big wins, including the Irish Open in 2009 when he was still an amateur player. He also won a very important tournament called The Open Championship in 2019.
Shane has proudly played for Ireland in team events. He helped the Irish teams win the European Amateur Team Championship in both 2007 and 2008. He also represented Europe in the exciting Ryder Cup in 2021, 2023, and 2025. Europe won the Ryder Cup in 2023 and 2025, and Shane made the winning putt in the 2025 event! He even hit a rare hole-in-one at the Masters in 2026.

Early Life and Golf Beginnings
Shane Lowry was born in Mullingar, Ireland. He grew up in a town called Clara, County Offaly. His father, Brendan Lowry, was a well-known football player. Brendan won the 1982 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Final with the Offaly team. Shane has always stayed connected to his home county. He loves to watch Offaly play and supports them strongly.
Shane started learning golf at Esker Hills Golf Club. This is where his amazing amateur career began. He also studied at Athlone Institute of Technology on a sports scholarship.
Amazing Amateur Career
Shane showed his talent early on. He became the Irish Amateur Close Champion in 2007. He won against Niall Turner in the final match. Shane was also a key player for the Irish teams that won the European Amateur Team Championship in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he was even on the same team as fellow golf star Rory McIlroy.
A huge moment in his amateur career happened in May 2009. Shane won the Irish Open while still an amateur! This was his very first tournament on the European Tour. He beat Robert Rock in a sudden-death playoff. This made him only the third amateur ever to win on the European Tour. He shot an incredible score of 62, which was one of the lowest ever by an amateur on the tour.
After this win, Shane became a recognized name in golf. He was ranked 168th in the world, even as an amateur. Many golf experts praised his victory. It was a very special win for Irish golf.
Turning Professional
Shane decided to become a professional golfer right after his Irish Open win in 2009. This meant he gave up the chance to play in the Walker Cup. He played his first professional tournament, the European Open, on May 28.
He had to work hard at the start of his professional career. He missed the cut in his first three tournaments. But he soon started earning money from his play. In November 2009, he finished 3rd in a tournament in Japan. By January 2010, he was ranked among the top 100 golfers in the world.
European Tour Success
Shane got his first professional win in October 2012. He won the Portugal Masters by one stroke. This victory helped him get back into the top 100 world rankings. It also allowed him to play in the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament.
In 2014, Shane finished second at the BMW PGA Championship. He also tied for ninth place at The Open Championship. This was his best finish at a major tournament at that time. In August 2015, Shane won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in the United States. He won by two strokes.
PGA Tour Highlights
Shane joined the PGA Tour for the 2015–16 season. In 2016, he almost won the U.S. Open. He led by four strokes after the third round. But he finished tied for second place after a tough final round.
He continued to play well, and in January 2019, Shane won the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship. He came from behind to win by one shot. This was a great start to his year.
Then, in July 2019, Shane achieved his biggest dream. He won The Open Championship at Royal Portrush! He shot an amazing 63 in the third round, setting a new course record. He won the tournament by six shots. This was a huge moment in his career. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he held the famous Claret Jug trophy for two years!
Shane played for the European team in the Ryder Cup in 2021, 2023, and 2025. Europe won in 2023 and 2025. In the 2025 Ryder Cup, Shane made a crucial putt on the final hole. This putt helped Europe win the trophy!
In 2022, Shane finished second at The Honda Classic. He also won the BMW PGA Championship in September 2022. He shot a final-round 65 to win by one stroke. In 2024, Shane shot a record-tying 62 at the 2024 PGA Championship. This was one of the best rounds ever played in a major tournament. He also won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in 2024 with his teammate Rory McIlroy.
Life Outside Golf
Shane Lowry married Wendy Honner in 2016. They have two daughters together. Shane is a proud supporter of his hometown's Gaelic sports club, Clara GAA. He often wears their black and white colors during tournaments.
In 2021, Shane announced a partnership with Offaly GAA. He is also a lifelong fan of the famous English football club, Manchester United.
