The Idea of Shenango Valley City
In 2004, some local leaders suggested a big change. They wanted to combine Sharpsville with nearby towns like Hermitage, Sharon, Farrell, and Wheatland. This new, larger city would be called Shenango Valley City.
The idea was put to a vote for the people to decide. The governor of Pennsylvania at the time, Ed Rendell, supported the plan. Other important state officials also visited the area to encourage people to vote yes.
The new city would have mostly followed the government structure of Hermitage. This included keeping the mayor and the nine-member city council. Even with the merger, the different school districts would have stayed separate. However, the plan was voted down by the people. Because of this vote, the idea of merging could not be brought up again until 2009.
