The Shawmere River is a river located in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Sudbury District. This river is part of a large area where water drains into James Bay. It is also a smaller river that flows into the Ivanhoe River.
Where the River Flows
The Shawmere River starts in a small lake that doesn't have a name. This lake is found in Gamey Township. From there, the river flows north into Yohannson Lake.
After Yohannson Lake, the river briefly enters Crockett Township. It then moves into Sandy Township. Here, it continues its journey northeast, flowing under Ontario Highway 101.
The river then heads north into Murdock Township. It flows into Renée Lake, which is on the border of Paul Township and Warren Township. The Shawmere River leaves Renée Lake on the Paul Township side.
River Connections
As it flows, the Shawmere River is joined by the Little Shawmere River. This smaller river flows into the Shawmere River from the left side. The Shawmere River then turns northeast back into Warren Township.
It continues its northeast path into Lemoine Township. Here, it flows into Lemoine Lake. In this lake, Carty Creek joins the Shawmere River from the right side.
The river then flows into Shawmere Lake. Two more creeks, Lincoln Creek and Mishionga Creek, join the Shawmere River from the left side in this lake.
Journey to the Ivanhoe River
After Shawmere Lake, the river passes through a small part of Folyet Township. It then enters Oates Township. Here, it flows under the Canadian National Railway's main train line.
This railway line is near a place called Shawmere. Finally, the Shawmere River reaches its end. It flows into the Ivanhoe River.
The Ivanhoe River then flows into the Groundhog River. The Groundhog River joins the Mattagami River. The Mattagami River then flows into the Moose River. The Moose River eventually empties into James Bay.
Rivers Joining In
Many smaller streams and rivers flow into the Shawmere River. These are called tributaries. Here are the main ones:
- Mishionga Creek (joins from the left side)
- Lincoln Creek (joins from the left side)
- Carty Creek (joins from the right side)
- Little Shawmere River (joins from the left side)
