Shell is a small community in Big Horn County, Wyoming, United States. It is called a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area that the government counts for population, but it's not an official town or city. In 2010, only 83 people lived there.

The community got its name because of the many fossil shells found in the area. These shells are ancient remains of sea creatures!

Dinosaur Discoveries

The rocks around Shell are famous for their dinosaur fossils. Formations like the Cloverly Formation and the Morrison Formation have given us many fossils. Scientists have found bones of dinosaurs and other ancient animals here.

Dinosaur Footprints

West of Shell, you can visit the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite. This is a very special place! It has rare dinosaur footprints from the Jurassic period. Imagine dinosaurs walking right where you are, millions of years ago!

Learning About Rocks

Shell is also home to a geology field station from Iowa State University. This is where students and scientists come to study rocks and the Earth.

Shell is located at the base of the Big Horn Mountains. It sits right at the entrance of Shell Canyon.

Shell Creek is a stream that starts in the Big Horn Mountains. It flows and joins the Big Horn River just north of Greybull.

Shell has a type of climate called a cold semi-arid climate. This means it's usually dry, but it can get very cold.

Temperature Extremes

The hottest temperature ever recorded in Shell was 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees Celsius). This happened on July 14, 2002, and again on June 14, 2021. The coldest temperature ever recorded was a very chilly -43 degrees Fahrenheit (-42 degrees Celsius) on December 21, 1983.
