The Story of Shieldsville
How Shieldsville Began
Shieldsville got its name from a famous person named James Shields. He was an American politician and an officer in the U.S. Army. James Shields helped plan out the community in 1856. It was first set up around the Irish St. Patrick Catholic Church.
In the early days of Shieldsville, land was sold for a very low price, just $2.00 per acre. The main goal was to encourage people from Ireland to come and live in the area.
The Church and the Lightning
The St. Patrick Church of Shieldsville has a unique story. On July 29, 2002, the church was hit by lightning. This was actually the second time in its history that lightning had struck it. The lightning caused a lot of damage to the church. However, the community worked together, and the church was rebuilt. It reopened two years later, on August 1, 2004.
