Shinya Kato (born September 19, 1980) is a former Japanese football player. He played as a goalkeeper during his career.

Shinya Kato's Football Journey

Shinya Kato was born in Kashima, Japan, on September 19, 1980. He began his football career in 1999. He joined the youth team of Kashima Antlers, a well-known club in Japan's top league, the J1 League.

Early Career and Loans

During his time at Kashima Antlers, it was hard for Shinya to get much playing time. This was because other talented goalkeepers, like Daijiro Takakuwa and Hitoshi Sogahata, were also on the team.

In July 2002, he moved to JEF United Ichihara on a loan. A few months later, in October, he went on another loan to Yokohama F. Marinos. Even with these moves, he still didn't play many games.

He returned to Kashima Antlers in 2003. However, he didn't play in any matches that year. At the end of the 2003 season, he left the club.

Finding His Way: Kashiwa Reysol and Ehime FC

After taking a year off, Shinya joined Kashiwa Reysol in 2005. He made his first professional league appearance on November 23 against Sanfrecce Hiroshima. But just like before, it was tough to become the main goalkeeper, as Yuta Minami was often chosen to play.

In June 2009, Shinya moved to Ehime FC. Here, he started playing more often under the coach Kazuhito Mochizuki. He played in 7 league games for Ehime FC.

However, when Coach Mochizuki left, Shinya didn't play as much under the new coach, Ivica Barbarić.

Later Career and Retirement

In 2010, Shinya joined Ventforet Kofu. But he didn't get to play in any games for this club.

His last club was AC Nagano Parceiro in 2011. This team played in the Japan Football League, which is a lower division. He played in 19 games for them, which was the most he played for any single club.

Shinya Kato decided to retire from professional football at the end of the 2011 season. Throughout his career, he played a total of 29 league games.
