Shoals is a small town in Indiana, a state in the United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Martin County. In 2020, about 677 people lived there.
Shoals is famous for a cool rock formation called the Jug Rock. It's the only free-standing table rock east of the Mississippi River.

History of Shoals
The town of Shoals was first named Memphis. It was officially planned out in 1844.
Long ago, in the early 1900s, Shoals was known for making buttons. These special buttons were made from mother of pearl. This material came from mussels found in the nearby White River.

Shoals Population in 2010
In 2010, the census showed that 756 people lived in Shoals. There were 376 households, which are groups of people living together. About 189 of these were families.
The town had about 422 people per square mile. Most residents, 97.4%, were White. A small number were African American, Native American, or Asian. Some people were from other races or a mix of two or more races. About 1.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.
About 23.7% of households had children under 18. Nearly half of all households, 49.7%, were not families. Many people, 22.4%, lived alone and were 65 or older. The average household had 2.01 people. The average family had 2.81 people.
The average age in Shoals was 47.1 years old. About 20.1% of residents were under 18. About 24.6% were 65 or older. The town had slightly more females (50.9%) than males (49.1%).
Economy of Shoals
A big part of Shoals' economy comes from gypsum mines. Gypsum is a soft mineral used to make things like drywall. These mines were found in the middle of the 1900s.
Two large mines employ over 400 workers. The National Gypsum mine is about 2 miles (3.2 km) east of Shoals. It is the deepest gypsum mine in the United States, going down 515 feet (157 meters).
The National Gypsum company operates a mine and factory in Shoals. The mine started in the 1950s. It is about 400 to 500 feet (122 to 152 meters) underground. This mine provides gypsum to make drywall and other products. These products are made right at the factory on the surface.
National Gypsum extracts about 80 to 100 truckloads of gypsum every day. This gypsum is used to produce materials like wallboard. The facility employs around 190 to 200 people. It's very efficient because the gypsum is mined, processed, and turned into drywall all in one place.
Education in Shoals
The town has a place where you can borrow books, called the Shoals Public Library. Public schools in Shoals are managed by Shoals Public Schools.
