The Antennaria pulcherrima is a type of flowering plant found in North America. It belongs to the daisy family. People often call it the showy pussytoes or handsome pussytoes. This plant grows in many parts of Canada, including its cold Arctic areas. You can also find it in parts of the United States, like Alaska and the northern Rocky Mountains and Cascades.
About the Showy Pussytoes Plant
The Antennaria pulcherrima is a plant that grows from the ground each year. It can reach a height of about 65 centimeters (about 2 feet). This plant is special because its male and female flowers grow on different plants.
Where Does This Plant Grow?
This plant likes to grow in certain kinds of places. It often lives in alluvial soils. These are soils that streams and rivers have carried and dropped off. You will usually find the showy pussytoes in cold, high places. This includes alpine areas, which are like mountain tops. It also grows in subarctic areas, which are very cold regions just below the Arctic.
Types of Showy Pussytoes
There are two main types, or subspecies, of Antennaria pulcherrima:
- Antennaria pulcherrima subsp. eucosma (Fernald & Wiegand) R.J.Bayer – This type grows in rocky areas called limestone barrens. You can find it in Newfoundland and on Anticosti Island in Quebec.
- Antennaria pulcherrima subsp. pulcherrima – This is the most common type. It grows in most of the places where the showy pussytoes plant is found.
