Early Life and Musical Start

Shy Glizzy, whose real name is Marquis Amonte King, was born on December 12, 1992, in Washington, D.C.. He grew up in the Southeast part of the city. He got the nickname "Shy" when he was a young child.

As a teenager, he started reading a lot, including the Quran, newspapers, and biographies. This reading inspired him to begin writing rap songs. He once said he was trying to write a book, but it turned into a song instead. Shy Glizzy has mentioned that he didn't listen to much rap music when he was young. Instead, he listened to go-go music, a popular style from Washington, D.C. He believes this unique music helped him create his own special sound.
