Sibley is a city in the state of Iowa, United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Osceola County, Iowa. In 2020, about 2,860 people lived there.
Sibley is also close to Hawkeye Point. This is the highest natural spot in all of Iowa.

History of Sibley
Sibley began in 1872. This was when the Sioux City & St. Paul Railroad built tracks through the area. It is the oldest town in Osceola County.
The city was named after Henry Hastings Sibley. He was a famous general and later became the first governor of Minnesota. William L. Harding, who was the governor of Iowa from 1917 to 1921, was born in Sibley in 1877.
In 2018, Sibley was involved in a legal case. A local resident had complained about a smell from a nearby plant. The city told him not to talk to the media. The ACLU argued that this went against his First Amendment right to free speech. A court agreed, saying city officials could not stop him from speaking to reporters.

Sibley is located at coordinates 43°24′11″N 95°44′47″W / 43.40306°N 95.74639°W.
The city covers an area of about 1.68 square miles (4.35 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

Sibley has a climate with warm summers and cold winters. The hottest temperature ever recorded was 108°F (42°C) in July. The coldest was -40°F (-40°C) in January and February.
The city gets about 30 inches (76 cm) of rain each year. It also gets about 41.5 inches (105 cm) of snow. Most of the snow falls in winter months like December and January.

Iowa Highway 60 goes near Sibley. It connects to Le Mars and Bigelow, Minnesota.
Iowa Highway 9 passes about 1.5 miles north of the city. It leads to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Lansing, Iowa.
Train Lines
The Union Pacific Worthington Subdivision train line runs through Sibley. This line connects the Minneapolis area to Sioux City. About four trains use this line each day.
On May 16, 2021, a train accident happened in Sibley. 47 train cars went off the tracks and caught fire. They were carrying materials like asphalt and chemicals. About 80 people living nearby had to leave their homes for safety.
