The Siege of Lier in 1582 was an important event during the Eighty Years' War and the Anglo-Spanish War (1585–1604). It took place on August 1 and 2, 1582, in the town of Lier, which is near Antwerp in what is now Belgium.

During this siege, the Spanish army, led by Governor-General Don Alexander Farnese, took control of Lier. They were helped by a group of Scottish soldiers who were supposed to be defending the town for the Dutch and English. These Scottish troops, led by Captain William Semple, were unhappy and switched sides.

The Spanish forces defeated the remaining Dutch, English, and German soldiers who were defending Lier. Sadly, all the soldiers defending the town were either killed or captured. News of the Spanish victory shocked the States-General (the Dutch government) in Antwerp. Many Protestant citizens in the area felt unsafe and decided to sell their homes and move to northern Flanders.

Why Lier Was Important

Lier was a very important place because of its location. People at the time called it "the stronghold of Antwerp and the key to the Duchy of Brabant." This meant that controlling Lier was crucial for controlling the larger city of Antwerp and the surrounding region.

Captain William Semple's actions had big consequences. He was rewarded for his help by King Philip II of Spain. Later, another officer, Colonel Boyd, might have been inspired by Semple's example when he betrayed the city of Bruges the following year.

Other Spanish Victories

The Spanish army continued to have success after Lier. On November 17, they captured Steenwijk. This town had been taken by Dutch forces earlier, but the Spanish, led by Johann Baptista von Taxis, forced the Protestant troops there to surrender.
