Carex leporinella is a type of plant called a sedge. Its common name is Sierra hare sedge. This plant grows in dense groups and is found in mountain areas.

Where the Sierra Hare Sedge Grows

This sedge naturally grows in the western parts of the United States. You can find it from California all the way to Wyoming. It especially likes to grow in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Carex leporinella prefers wet places in the mountains. It often grows in meadows, which are open fields with grass and wildflowers.

What the Sierra Hare Sedge Looks Like

Carex leporinella grows in thick clumps. Its thin stems can reach about 30 centimeters (about 12 inches) tall. Each stem has a few very narrow leaves. These leaves are usually folded or rolled up.

Flowers and Seeds of the Sedge

The plant's flowers grow in an open cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster has several spikes that are golden to brown in color. The individual flowers are covered by scales that are reddish-brown with white edges. After the flowers, the plant produces fruit. Each fruit is covered by a light-colored, curved sac called a perigynium. This sac has a small wing on it.
