She ran it from 1976 to 1998. Her company was known for designing buildings for technology companies. Many of these companies were in Silicon Valley.

Early Life and Learning

Sigrid was born in Bremerhaven, Germany, on January 3, 1943. When she was 10, her family moved to Oakland, California. She loved architecture from a young age. This was during the time Germany was rebuilding after World War II.

She went on to study architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. She finished her studies in 1966. In 1971, she got her license to be an architect in California. After graduating, Sigrid worked for several architecture companies.

Her Career as an Architect

Sigrid worked for different companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Then, in 1976, she started her own company. It was called SLR Architects. She became very good at designing buildings for technology and industry.

Designing for Tech Companies

Sigrid designed many buildings for early tech companies in Silicon Valley. These included big names like Amdahl Corporation and Apple Computer. She also worked for Claris, IBM, Raychem, Sun Microsystems, and Tandem Computers. Her design for a testing building for Apple won a special award. It was an Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

She also designed buildings for Stanford University. These included the Storey House and the Press Building. Other clients included AT&T, Pac Bell, Pan Am, San Jose State University, and United Airlines. SLR Architects was located in East Palo Alto, California. Sigrid retired in 1998, and her company closed.

Supporting Women in Architecture

Sigrid was a strong supporter of women's rights. She was a member of several groups that helped women. These included the Organization of Women Architects (OWA). She also belonged to the Union Internationale des Femmes Architectes (U.I.F.A.). She was also part of the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

In 1998, her work was added to a special collection. This collection is called the International Archive of Women in Architecture. It is at Virginia Tech University. Sigrid once said she fought for women's issues because she wanted fairness. She felt that differences between genders should not matter anymore.

She also held important positions. She was the chairperson of the Palo Alto Architectural Review Board. She was a director for the AIA Santa Clara chapter. She also directed California Women in Environmental Design.

The University of California, Berkeley, where Sigrid studied, has a special award. It is called the Berkeley-Rupp Architecture Professorship and Prize. This award is given every two years. It honors someone who has helped women advance in architecture.

Her Life Outside Work

Sigrid loved to travel a lot during her career. After she retired, she focused on painting. She painted beautiful watercolors of landscapes. These were often scenes from around the San Francisco Bay Area.

She kept many travel journals. In these journals, she wrote notes and added photos. She also included sketches and her watercolor paintings. Her paintings were shown in art exhibitions. These shows were put on by the Pacific Art League of Palo Alto.

Sigrid shared her thoughts about her life and work. She said she wanted to be remembered for speaking up. She wanted to be remembered for doing good work as an architect and painter. She also hoped people would remember her for telling good stories. She said she enjoyed almost everything she did. But she also felt that life was too short for all she wanted to do.

Sigrid was diagnosed with gastric cancer in November 2003. She passed away on May 27, 2004. She was married to Steven Rupp.
