The Sikkim wedge-billed babbler is a unique bird found in parts of Asia. It's also known as the blackish-breasted babbler. This bird belongs to a group called the Old World babbler family. It gets its name from Sikkim, a state in India where it was first discovered.
You can find this special bird in the Indian subcontinent and nearby areas of Southeast Asia. Its home includes countries like Bhutan, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. It loves to live in warm, wet forests, both in lowlands and on mountains. Sadly, this bird is becoming rare because its habitat (its natural home) is being lost.
About the Sikkim Wedge-Billed Babbler
This bird was first described by a person named Louis Mandelli in 1873. He studied birds from Sikkim. The bird's scientific name is Stachyris humei. It was named after Allan Octavian Hume, another important bird expert.
For a long time, this bird was simply called the "wedge-billed babbler." But now, scientists know there are actually two different types. The Sikkim wedge-billed babbler is one of them. The other is called Stachyris roberti.
Where Does the Sikkim Wedge-Billed Babbler Live?
The Sikkim wedge-billed babbler lives in the lower parts of broadleaf evergreen forests. It also likes areas with lots of bamboo. These birds are usually found at heights between 900 and 1,950 meters (about 3,000 to 6,400 feet) above sea level. In Bhutan, they prefer slopes that face west.
During the colder winter months, these birds might move to lower elevations. This helps them find food and stay warm.
What Does the Sikkim Wedge-Billed Babbler Eat?
These birds usually live in small groups. They search for their food in the forest undergrowth. Their diet mainly consists of insects. They especially like to eat woodlice and boring beetles. These beetles are often found inside wood.
