History of Silver City
The town was first known by a different name: "Palmetto Home." This name came from a large farm nearby. These large farms were called plantations and were common in the southern United States.
2023 Tornado Impact
On March 24, 2023, a very strong and destructive tornado directly hit Silver City. Many people were injured during the storm. Several buildings in the town were completely destroyed. This powerful tornado had also caused damage in other towns, including Rolling Fork and Midnight, before it reached Silver City. Experts rated the tornado as a high-end EF4 overall. However, the damage specifically in Silver City was rated as EF2.
Geography of Silver City
Silver City is found in the middle of Humphreys County. It is part of the Mississippi Delta region. The town is located right next to the Yazoo River on its eastern side.
Roads and Nearby Towns
U.S. Route 49W is a main road that goes through Silver City. If you travel north on this road for about 7 miles (11 km), you will reach Belzoni. Belzoni is the main town, or county seat, of Humphreys County. Traveling south on US 49W for about 20 miles (32 km) will take you to Yazoo City. Another road, Mississippi Highway 149, goes southwest from Silver City. It leads about 10 miles (16 km) to the town of Louise. This highway used to be an older part of US 49W.
