Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Simon Pereyns (born around 1530, died 1600) was a famous painter from a region called Flanders, which is now part of Belgium. He traveled a lot during his life. In 1558, he moved to Lisbon, Portugal, and later to Madrid, Spain.

In 1566, Simon Pereyns made a big move to Mexico. There, he became very well-known for his beautiful paintings. Many of his artworks have been lost over time, but some important ones still exist. One of his notable creations is the large altarpiece at the Franciscan convent of Huejotzingo in Puebla, Mexico. This convent is one of the historic monasteries on the slopes of Popocatépetl. Among his works, he also painted a picture of Saint Christopher.

His Most Famous Painting

Pereyns' most important painting was likely the Virgin of Forgiveness. This artwork was the main part of the Altar of Forgiveness inside the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral. Sadly, both the painting and the altar were destroyed in a fire in 1967.

The Story Behind the Painting

The Virgin of Forgiveness painting has some interesting stories connected to it. One story says that the altar got its name because Pereyns painted this beautiful image of the Virgin Mary while he was facing a difficult situation with the authorities. It is said that by creating this painting, he earned forgiveness.

Historical records confirm that Pereyns did indeed paint the Virgin of Forgiveness. He was asked to create this painting after a trial by a special religious court. As part of the outcome of his trial, he was ordered to paint a picture of the Virgin de los Remedios for the cathedral. This painting later became known as the Virgin of Forgiveness.
