Sissach (pronounced "zee-sakh") is a town and the main center of the Sissach district in the canton of Basel-Country, Switzerland. It's a great place to learn about Swiss history and nature.

History of Sissach

Sissach covers an area of about 8.87 square kilometers (3.4 square miles). A big part of this land, about 46.6%, is covered by forests. About 28.2% of the land is used for farming, growing crops, or for pastures where animals graze.

Around 25% of Sissach's land has buildings, roads, and other developed areas. This includes homes, businesses, and places for sports and parks. There's also a tiny bit of water, like rivers or streams.

The town of Sissach started as a long village along the Ergolz river. Over time, it grew to fill the whole valley and even parts of the hillsides around it. It expanded along the road that connects two mountain passes in the Jura Mountains. Some smaller areas like Itchon, Gruonach, and Wilmatten also became part of Sissach.
