Slater is a city located in Saline County, Missouri, in the United States. In 2020, about 2,256 people lived there.

History of Slater

Slater was officially planned and built in 1889. However, a post office had already been open there since 1878. The city was named after John F. Slater, who was an important official for the railroad.

In 2010, the census showed that 1,856 people lived in Slater. These people lived in 785 households, and 469 of these were families. The city had about 1,289 people per square mile (498 people per square kilometer).

Most of the people in Slater (90.1%) were White. About 6.4% were African American, and smaller percentages were Native American (0.2%), Asian (0.4%), or from other races (1.2%). Media in Slater

Slater has a weekly newspaper called the Slater Main Street News. This newspaper used to be known as the Slater News-Rustler. The old name was quite unique for a local newspaper. This happened because Slater used to have two different weekly newspapers, The News and The Rustler. They were published on different days. As the town's population grew smaller in the early 1900s, the two newspapers combined, creating the unusual name.

Famous People from Slater

  • Joe Kleine – He was a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic basketball team that won a gold medal. He also played in the NBA for 15 years.
  • Felice Lyne (1887–1935) – Born in Slater, she became one of the most famous international opera singers in the early 1900s.
  • Steve McQueen – A well-known actor. He lived on Thomson Lane in Slater sometimes during his childhood and went to Orearville Elementary School.
